Applications are invited for the position of Scientific Programmer for the Brain Architecture Project, a multi-institutional collaboration based at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. The project aims to assemble available knowledge about the structure of the vertebrate nervous system and to provide relevant analytical and visualization tools. The scientific programmer will provide general computing support for the Brain Architecture Project, including the development of data models and the implementation of databases / knowledge bases for the project. The scientific programmer will also assist in developing and managing web tools/sites using various technologies including Java/J2EE (JSF, Spring, Hibernate, Tomcat), the plone/zope framework and assorted CGI scripts. Experience using SQL relational databases is required.
A main focus of the project involves the collation and integration of neuroanatomical information in the extant literature into a comprehensive database. Knowledge of or strong interest in text mining and natural language processing / computational linguistics would be greatly preferred. Experience with text-search libraries (e.g. Apache Lucene and related APIs) and related tools would be beneficial.
This person will also provide support for administration of our computer infrastructure, including multiple Linux-based servers.
Candidates should have an MS or PhD in computer science (or equivalent training). Programming experience with a good subset of Java, MATLAB, Perl or Python languages is desired. Candidates with an active interest in neuroscience will have an opportunity to participate in the scientific aspects of the project.
